I think that citing your sources to avoid plagiarism is crucial in giving credit where credit is due. People have worked very hard to obtain the information that they have obtained and for someone to steal that information and not give them credit is just wrong. I would be very upset if I worked long and hard on something and someone knowingly used my information without giving me my proper credit.
Also when we cite someone else's work we also give the reader the option to further investigate what we have written. It gives our own work credibility.

Kari your points and views are well stated and I completely agree with what plagiarism deters. I think if anyone works long and hard in obtaining researchable information it should be acknowledged. On the flip side their information can be debated as well. It makes for a way to go back and look at how why and when the information was gathered.
ReplyDeleteGetting off the topic of writing, what comes to mind concerning plagiarism is in the music industry. Many "new" artists use samples of "older" music or musicians work and reep all the benefits.
Scholastically speaking, plagiarism serves no one any good in my opinion.
